-Area Description

This Hotel is located in Megalochori, a small picturesque village with neoclassical houses, stone-cobbled narrow pathways and whitewashed churches with characteristic bells.  Its history lies back to the 17th century as it was the home of merchants and wealthy land owners while it was also used as a pirate’s hideaway.  Less than 60 years ago the village belonged to one of the most powerful families of the island who first produced the famous sweet wine Vinsanto and exported it throughout the world.

Megalochori is the center of the wine industry of Santorini with three wineries located at the area while its valley is well known for the vineyards producing exceptional strong wines.  Another famous product of the area are the local tasteful tomatoes that are served fresh, sun-dried, in paste or they are cooked as a sweet dessert.

A must for photography in the area are the two most famous churches.  ‘’Panagia ton Isodion’’ dedicated to Virgin Mary with a beautiful woodcarved icon screen and byzantine icons of Russian style and Aghios Nikolaos Marmaritis which was a Doric temple of the 4th century B.C. and was latter converted into a Christian church.

Other interesting places to visit nearby  are the beaches of Plaka (approximately 25 minutes walking distance) or Thermi (approximately 40 minutes walking distance) with thermal springs from the ‘’vains’’ of the volcano’s hot water.  Both beaches are accessible through a narrow foot path.

Megalochori is an excellent spot for excursions around the island with the capital of Santorini, Fira  located 9 kms away, the beach of Vlychada at 5 kms away and the beaches of Perivolos and of Perissa at 6 kms away.  In close distance, you will also find the Prehistoric Excavations of Akrotiri, the Red Beach and the antique city of Ancient Thera.  The port of Athinios is located 4 kms away and the airport is located 8 kms away.
