Al Ahliyya Amman University was the first private university in Jordan. It was founded by Dr Ahmad Mufleh Al-Hourani in 1990. He noticed that some students could not enrol in public universities due to their grades, so he set out to establish a private university that would welcome them. When the university first opened it had three faculties, namely the faculty of administrative and financial sciences, the faculty of arts and sciences, and the faculty of law. Today it boasts eight faculties, including 29 bachelor programs and eight masters programmes. It is also home to a Business School and a Scientific Research Institute. The Deanship of Student Affairs is responsible for organising the university’s extra-curricular activities to help students discover their talents, skills, and potentials. There are various clubs for students to join, as well as recreational trips and cultural events that take place throughout the academic year, such as the Annual Exhibition and Bazaar of Arab Students. Student clubs include debate club, multimedia and graphic design club, and poetry club. The Deanship also publishes the university’s newspaper ‘Amman Al-Ahliyyah News’.The university is located in Amman, the capital of Jordan. Amman is a relatively modern city, being mostly a creation of the 20th century, yet it has become the fifth largest city in the Arab world. As the country’s economic, industrial, and political centre, Amman is a surprisingly lively metropolis in the middle of an ancient region. The city’s location makes it an ideal place to explore the Middle East and experience the Arab culture first hand.
