CUNY Medgar Evers College was set up in 1970 in Brooklyn, in the name of civil rights leader Medgar Wiley Evans. It is the youngest City University of New York senior college.The institution was founded at the request of community organisations such as the Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council and NAACP.Medgar Evers College offers degrees ranging from public administration, liberal studies and teacher education to nursing, biology, environmental science and computer science. The programmes are divided across the School of Business, School of Liberal Arts and Education and the School of Science, Health and Technology.In addition, the School for Community and Professional Development provide help to the community to improve the skills for new careers, promotions or higher education, and to enhance personal development through artistic and cultural workshops. The School is formed of the Academy for Youth, Academy for Career Pathways, Adult and Continuing Education and Research and Advocacy Centers.Two areas of research on which the college focuses through specifically created centres are black literature and the social, cultural and economic phenomena characterising the Caribbean-American community. The Dubois Bunche Centre for Public Policy looks and advocates for solutions to challenges black people confront in cities.Medgar Evers College athletics cover basketball, cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, soccer, volleyball, cheer leading, netball, swimming and bowling. Beyond sports, you can join the student newspaper, fraternities and sororities.According to a survey of CUNY, most graduates go into private businesses in architecture and engineering, as well as business and social services. The vast majority of Medgar Evers graduates stay in Brooklyn.
