The Russian Institute of Theatre Arts - GITIS is the largest and oldest independent theatrical arts school in Russia. It is located in Moscow.The university was founded in September 1978 as a private music and drama school and was originally called the Shostakovsky Music School. Five years later it received conservatory status and and became the first education institution in Russia where actors received higher education.The university trains students in various theatrical arts professions while simultaneously providing a university education in the liberal arts and humanities.Students are able to train in many disciplines including acting, design, directing, musical theatre, ballet, variety theatre, history and criticism, theatre management and production.Students can study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level or participate in short summer or winter courses.The university actively participates in various international projects as well as hosting its own festivals, conferences, lectures and workshops. Over the past 17 years the university has organised 276 international events welcoming students from Greece, Israel, China, Spain, Serbia, Estonia and the UK.It has formed partnerships with institutions from all over the world including the Royal School for Performing Arts in Madrid, the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, the Drama School of Athens Conservatoire, the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre among others.Alumni of the university include theatre director Anatoly Efros, actor and singer Lev Leschchenko, actress Tatiana Samoilova and ballet dancer Maris Liepa. Perhaps the most notable person to be associated with the university is Constantin Stanislavski, an actor and director most famous for his method - a system of techniques designed to enable actors to create more believable characters and fully put themselves in the characters’ shoes.
