The Higher School of Economics (HSE) is a research-based institution and one of the largest universities in Russia.Established in 1992, the university is the brainchild of the professional community and it was founded on the principle of promoting national economic and social reforms by educating a new generation of future leaders in Russia.It was awarded university status in 1995 and through cooperative agreements with the University Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne, Erasmus University in Rotterdam and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), it has become well known in the fields of political science, social sciences and economics.HSE’s main campus is located in buildings across Moscow, while there are also three branch campuses in other parts of the country. A campus was established in Niznhy Novgorod in 1996, which is one of Russia’s leading industrial and scientific cities as well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.In 1998 HSE opened two additional campuses in St Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, and Perm, a city close to the Ural Mountains.HSE operates 100-plus research institutes, as well as more than 20 international laboratories. The university’s primary research fields include microeconomics, education, social welfare, healthcare and technological development.HSE also has a publishing house, established in 2000, which has become one of Russia’s largest university publishers.In its short history more than 35,000 have graduated and an HSE Alumni Association has been established, and a survey of HSE graduates found that around 75 percent work in the private sector.
