Ogarev Mordovia State University was initially established in 1931 as the Agronomy Pedagogical Institute. It gained university status in 1957 and was renamed Ogarev Mordovia State University. In 2010 the federal government awarded the university with the title National Research University.The university is organised into seven academic institutes and nine faculties. There are over 100 courses available for students to study at both undergraduate and graduate level. There is also the option to study part-time or participate in an evening programme.In 1987 the university began developing partnerships with higher education institutions around the world. Since then the university has expanded its international connections and has established a number of academic exchange programmes. The student body consists of over 300 international students representing 30 countries between them. The university offers short-term Russian language courses for international students to learn valuable language skills.The university is currently one of the largest scientific centres in Russia, carrying out research in 28 fields of science. Every year it publishes six peer-reviewed federal journals, outlining the research that has been carried out. The university also collaborates with other leading research centres across the country and around the world to exchange scientific research.The university is located in Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, Russia. The city was founded in 1641 as a fortress named Atemar, but today its name refers to the Saranka River that lies nearby. Saransk is known across the globe for its sporting achievements, hosting many Olympic and World championships such as the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The city attracts increasing numbers of tourists every year with its array of historical buildings, cathedrals and museums.
