St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University formerly known as Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute, is a public medical university specialising in pediatrics, located in Saint Petersburg, Russia.Founded in 1924, it is the oldest independent pediatric university in the world.Originally known as the Institute for Protection of Maternity and Infancy, the main building was located on the grounds of City Children’s Hospital.During World War Two, the Institute was mentioned on the German map of shelling as object 708, a special mark for a place that was to be destroyed. Despite direct hits on the building, no children were injured.Today, students may practice in the hospital, learning from practitioners and using modern diagnostic technologies such as multislice computer tomography, MRI and a radioisotope laboratory, as well as research technology such as clinical, biochemical, bacteriological and virological laboratories.The university welcomes international students, with classes available in both Russian and English. Past students have come from over 70 countries and four continents.Partnership universities include The University of Texas Health Science Center in the USA, Democritus University of Thrace in Greece, Belarus State Medical University in Belarus and Mhitara Geraci’s Erevan State Medical University in Armenia.There are several faculties including medical science, pediatrics, clinical psychology, stomatology and dentistry.The university has four dormitories which are built as apartments/flats. University facilities include libraries, kitchens, bars and cafes, classrooms, reading rooms and sports halls.
