Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering is the oldest university of its kind in Russia. Its history dates back to 1832 when Emperor Nicholas I established the College of Civil Engineers. In 1993 the college was granted full university status and was given its present name.There are currently 27 undergraduate, 30 graduate, and 10 specialist degree programmes available for students to study. Faculties include: architecture, civil engineering, environmental engineering and municipal services, automobile and road-building, economics and management, and forensic investigation and law in construction and transport.The Office for Social Welfare and Extracurricular Activities was established in 2006. It is responsible for overseeing student clubs and events that take place throughout the year. There is a range of sports clubs available for students to join such as alpine skiing, basketball, boxing, swimming and volleyball. For students who are more creative there is the Kirpich Student Club, which regularly organises art, dance, music and theatre activities.The university is situated in Saint Petersburg, a port city in Russia. It is Russia’s second largest city and one of the world’s major cities. Saint Petersburg is considered the country’s cultural centre, boasting a number of impressive venues such as the State Russian Museum and the Mariinsky Theatre, both of which regularly showcase the best of Russian art and performance.
