Program Info
Galapagos is among the world’s most famous travel destinations. Many people dream of spending just a couple of days on that amazing archipelago and we even allow you to spend a couple of weeks on Galapagos Islands while volunteering in our teaching program.
The project’s top priority is to improve the level of English of future generations of the island since it’s so isolated from the mainland of Ecuador. By improving the level of English children can easily communicate with tourists, enabling them to benefit from the Islands’ growing tourism industry. Most of the schools unfortunately are generally understaffed in qualified English teachers so the contribution of foreign volunteers is very important. What better place to give back to society and make a difference in the lives of young island inhabitant alongside the beautiful beaches and exotic animals of the world-famous Galapagos Islands?
Work Tasks
Volunteers in this project work with the teachers of local schools. They assist them during the class schedule, help to prepare classes, tutor the children in primary or secondary schools and play with them during class breaks.
Classes usually take place during the morning hours from approximately 7.30 am to 1.30 pm. In the afternoons volunteers can enjoy free time discovering the wonders of Galapagos or for those who are extremely committed with the volunteer project there are several opportunities to assist the children with their homework, especially in English, Math, Computer and physical activities.
Class schedule, number of children at the school and volunteers’ main work emphasis may vary since we place our volunteers in different schools around this Island.
Accommodation
Top priority of our volunteer teaching programs in Ecuador is full cultural immersion. The best way to know more about Ecuadorian culture and customs, and even to practice your Spanish skills, is to live in a homestay. With this in mind, our volunteers on Galapagos Islands stay with a local Ecuadorian family who lives on San Cristobal Island. The host families provide our volunteers with a welcoming home and 3 meals per day. Laundry service is included once a week. All families are located within walking distance from the schools or only require a short bus ride.
Volunteers get a shared bedroom while the bathroom can be private or shared with other family members. The accommodations provide all of the basic services, including telephone in case of emergency, electricity and clean water. Not all rooms have hot water, but the climate on the Islands is year round hot and humid.
