The University of Memphis (UofM) is a research university located in Tennessee. It has roots dating back to 1912, yet it only became the university it is today in 1994.The picturesque 1,160-acre campus is approximately five miles east of downtown in the University District neighbourhood of east Memphis. As it is based in a historic neighbourhood, planners are maintaining a focus on its original historic architecture.Media has a strong presence on campus. The Daily Helmsman is the student newspaper on campus which is student written and produced. It publishes an impressive 5,500 copies a day across four days of the week, while employing a paid staff of more than 30.The university has accumulated a vast array of traditions over its long history. The Mighty Sound of the South Band is the university's band, and they now perform at all of the university football games.
