The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB) is the only public institution of higher learning located in the Pilsen region. The university currently has nine faculties with more than 60 departments and two institutes of higher learning. Students can choose from a wide range of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes and, of course, they can also select the form of their studies – full-time, combined or distance learning. Lifelong learning represents an integral part of the educational activities at the University of West Bohemia. It offers lifelong education to citizens through lectures, courses and comprehensive educational programmes, including the popular University of the Third Age. In addition to teaching, the university is also a centre for research and development, as evidenced by the massive investments into its growth and advancement, and also into the construction of a bigger university campus. The campus especially has been recently undergoing very dynamic changes – new buildings housing the European Centre of Excellence NTIS, the Centre for Technical and Scientific Education and Research and an extension of the university library have been erected there. The University of West Bohemia in Pilsen has an important position among universities in the Czech Republic and in the area of European Higher Education. At the end of 2012, the university obtained the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System label (ECTS).
