Volgograd State University is a leading higher education institution in the Volgograd region in south-west Russia.Founded in 1980, the institution has grown from 250 students across five subjects to 14,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate level.The university is spread across five campuses: Kalach-na-Donu, Uryupinsk, Mikhaylovka, Frolovo, and Akhtubinsk in the neighbouring region of Astrakhan Oblast.Today Volgograd State University teaches a range of subjects across 48 faculties, including 22 four-year bachelor’s degree courses and 62 postgraduate level degrees including PhDs. Some vocational training also takes place at the institution.Subject departments include: history, international relations and social technologies; mathematics and information technology; philology and intercultural communication; economy and finance, and law, among others.The university has partnerships with a number of similar institutions in and outside of Russia, including Moscow State University, St Petersburg State University, and the University of Cologne in Germany. A student and teacher exchange programme between Cologne and Volgograd has been in place since 1993.The majority of courses at Volgograd are taught in Russian, but some linguistics programmes are offered in English, German and French.Environmental sustainability is a key focus for the institution, and Volgograd has a number of eco-initiatives in place to spread awareness and campaign for the reduction of waste on campus and in the surrounding region. Student campaign and volunteer groups are also very proactive in this area.
